An Interview With Effortless Adventure

Effortless Adventure offers an easier way to create an exciting weekend getaway in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. I spoke with new business owner, Louis DeAngelis, about what Effortless Adventure has to offer the Granite state and what his experience has been like as a new business owner in the outdoor industry.

Q: What is effortless adventure? What sets it apart from the rest?

A: Effortless Adventure is a brand new way to help folks get outside in the White Mountains. We do that primarily through our Camping Gear Rental Packages that include literally everything you need for a great trip. Outdoor Recreation is increasingly more popular in New Hampshire, but many either do not have the equipment needed, or they just don’t have the experience to pull off a great camping trip.  We’re trying to change that and help those who want to get outside to actually do it! There are two main things that set us apart.  One is the simplicity of our process, going from ordering the gear online, to picking up the gear and camping is very easy.  Our location is just minutes off of I-93 in Plymouth (Right on the way to the White Mountains) and is fully automated. No waiting at counters or dealing with paperwork, enter your door and locker code and you are good to go! The second is our willingness to go the extra mile for our customers who need a bit more help in the planning stage.  Our website offers a lot of information in our Trip Planning section; however, if you want to speak to someone specifically about your trip we are happy to do so!

Q: What obstacles or set backs have you experienced as being a new business owner? (If any)

A: I’ve known I wanted to start a business at some point in my life for a long time.  I didn’t think I’d be doing it at 25 years old but here we are! This is our first season and the start up process has been challenging, but extremely rewarding as well as educational.  Navigating everything from building a website, to online advertising, social media, sourcing all of our equipment and more took a lot of time and was very much a 5 steps forward, 4 steps back type of deal. I am lucky that I have a lot of support from family and friends, as well as some great resources such as The Small Business Development Center and The Grafton County Regional Development Corporation who have helped with great insight, as well as some of the financing to make all of this happen.

Q: Are the trips kid and pet friendly?

A: Absolutely!  Like I mentioned before we are happy to help with suggestions if you’d like them, but there are tons of great hikes, swimming holes and more for the whole family.  That is one of the great things about the White Mountains! Whether you are looking for a quick outing, or a full day adventure, you can do it here! With pets, you’ll need to make sure the campground you are staying at will allow them and they are well behaved.

Q: What makes effortless adventure a valuable asset for someone who is new to hiking and camping?

A: For someone new to camping we are extremely valuable because buying all of the equipment for your first trip can be expensive.  If you are getting into something for the first time, being able to try before you buy is an appealing option. Even if you did have some of the gear, it is tricky to remember all of the little things to bring, leading to a less than great time for your trip.  That is another major benefit of using our gear. Everything from tents, sleeping bags a cooler and even down to a can opener, lighter and more are all included in the rental. We are also priced so that for someone who camps a handful of times per year, it really doesn’t make sense to make the investment to buy everything. As far as hiking goes, we are happy to recommend hikes throughout the region for all ability levels from families with young kids to someone looking for a big full day adventure.  Camping close by is a great way to get an early start, or knock off more than one hike or activity without driving all the way home!

Q: How has being a new business owner been rewarding and fulfilling thus far?

A: It’s been very exciting as all of the ideas have come to fruition and I can physically see everything come to life. The best feeling was receiving that first booking confirmation email and being able to breathe a sigh of relief that this will actually work.  A lot of people don’t realize the risk involved with starting a new business and how scary and exciting it can be at the same time. We have a long way to go, but we are off to a good start and I’m very excited about the future.

Q: What can people expect from effortless adventure for the foreseeable future?

A: We have a lot of exciting ideas and plans for the future. For this summer we plan to really focus on getting the word out about our Camping Gear Rental Packages. These packages will be the stepping stone into many of our ideas going forward At some point we may begin offering packages targeting backpackers featuring lightweight gear perfect for a backpacking trip in the White Mountains.  Other plans include more guided adventures ranging from day trips rock climbing, hiking, waterfall rappelling and more. Multi-Day trips that are fully guided including camping, meals and activities are also in the cards for the future of Effortless Adventure. Really our options are unlimited with what we can do to help people get outdoors and push their comfort zones a little at a time, either on their own, or with one of our experienced guides in the future.
